LONDON, United Kingdom, 6 November 2026. Human-Ai.Institute (HAI) is delighted to announce that its Founding Director, Prof. Markus Krebsz, has been welcomed as a member of the Universal DPI Safeguards Multi-Stakeholder Community of Practice (CoP), the collaborative expert platform of the Universal DPI Safeguards initiative led by the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (UN ODET) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The invitation follows the initiative's open call for its 2026–2027 Technical Working Groups, which drew more than 600 applications from across civil society, academia, think tanks and the private sector worldwide. Writing to Prof. Krebsz on 5 November 2026, the DPI Safeguards Initiative Secretariat noted that his "experience, insights, and proposed contributions stood out significantly" in what it described as "an exceptionally competitive review process".
"In recognition of your vital expertise and role in the wider DPI ecosystem, we are pleased to welcome you as a member of the Universal DPI Safeguards Multi-Stakeholder Community of Practice."
DPI Safeguards Initiative Secretariat, UN ODET / UNDP, 5 November 2026
What is the Universal DPI Safeguards Community of Practice?
Digital public infrastructure (DPI), the shared digital systems such as digital identity, payments and data exchange on which public services increasingly depend, is scaling rapidly around the world. The Universal DPI Safeguards initiative exists to ensure that this growth is safe, trusted and inclusive, translating the Universal DPI Safeguards Framework into practical, funded action and protecting fundamental rights by design. The Multi-Stakeholder Community of Practice is the initiative's wider expert platform. In the Secretariat's words, it "serves as our collaborative platform connecting technical experts, researchers, civil society leaders, and industry specialists."
What will Prof. Krebsz contribute?
As a CoP member, Prof. Krebsz will contribute to open consultations and expert review of forthcoming guidance, including the Implementation Guide on Financing and Budgeting DPI with Safeguards, and will take part in thematic briefings, research roundtables and technical dialogues on safeguards-by-design, governance, risk mitigation and emerging DPI architectures.
Why it matters for enterprise-wide AI risk management
Prof. Krebsz brings more than a decade of work at the intersection of risk management, regulation and emerging technology at the United Nations and beyond. He served as AI Project Lead for the UNECE Working Party on Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies (WP.6), leading the Common Regulatory Arrangement on products with embedded artificial intelligence (ECE/TRADE/486), and is a member of the European AI Office expert group and the IEEE P7007.1 working group. Human-Ai.Institute is an inaugural member of the United Nations University Global AI Network.
His Enterprise-Wide AI Risk Management framework, EW-AiRM™, is published by Wiley on 12 November 2026 and is listed in the OECD.AI catalogue of tools and metrics. Its emphasis on a named, accountable human owner for every deployed AI system, on pre-deployment assessment and on tested human override sits naturally alongside the safeguards-by-design agenda of the DPI Safeguards community.
"I am honoured to join the Universal DPI Safeguards Community of Practice. Safeguards are what turn digital public infrastructure from something people have to use into something people can trust. I look forward to contributing the practical, enterprise-wide risk lens of EW-AiRM™ to the initiative's consultations and technical dialogues, alongside colleagues from every region of the world."
Prof. Markus Krebsz
Notes to editors
About the Universal DPI Safeguards initiative.
Initiated by the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative develops and promotes the Universal DPI Safeguards Framework so that digital public infrastructure is built and financed with safeguards that protect fundamental rights.
Its 2026/2027 Technical Working, Working Group 1 (Government Implementers and Policymakers); Working Group 2 (Technical Experts and Strategic Advisors) run from October 2026 to 2027 and are producing a Guidance on Building DPI with Safeguards and the Universal DPI Safeguards Framework 3.0. The Multi-Stakeholder Community of Practice is the initiativeʼs wider expert platform, giving members access to open consultations, expert review of guidance documents, thematic briefings and technical dialogues.

About the appointment.
Prof. Krebsz applied to Working Group 2 (Technical Experts and Strategic Advisors) in the
initiativeʼs open call, which attracted more than 600 applications worldwide. The Secretariatʼs communication of 5 November 2026 confirmed that, while the limited size of the core Working Group 2 cohort meant a seat could not be offered for this cycle, his experience, insights and proposed contributions stood out significantly, and welcomed him as a member of the Multi-Stakeholder Community of Practice in recognition of his vital expertise and role in the wider DPI ecosystem. He participates in a personal, pro bono capacity.
